Along with tablet computers, we are seeing some fracturing in the computer market from the typical run of the mill PC or laptop. Apple made these famous with the Mac all-in-one unit with the computing unit and lcd in one piece of equipment and now it’s starting to gain real traction in the PC market. The real advantage is the space savings. For those PC users who need a small footprint and want convenience, these units provide both, and with the barebones AIO unit, now you can custom design your AIO unit to fit your needs. Need a bigger hard drive? Or more memory? No problem, just configure it the way you want it.
Start with the monitor size you want and go from there. Also keep in mind the limited space means that you should go big on the hard drive. There’s not too much room to add drives, so this helps alleviate the hassle of running of out of disk space. Hard drive pricing has come down since the Thailand flood, so a 2tb drive is now almost exactly what it was pre-flood. Also, add a good wireless card so that you aren’t running cable all over your home or business to stay connected. That limited space you have for the PC could also include limited room for construction to get networking to it. If you spend the extra money on a touchscreen, Windows 8 will run nicely on it and you can rid yourself of a keyboard or mouse (although some gasp here). Think of it as a really big phone… and please above all keep in mind that these AIO’s have limited upgradability so make sure you configure it the way you want it so it will last you for years to come.
