Today’s Wall Street Journal has a really good article about Hackers and how they attack and what they gained from the attack.
This is pretty important specifically to understand exactly how sophisticated the attacks are becoming and why they are occurring with increased frequency.
There are several points worth noting, first, Trend declared that the virus program the client was using was ‘dated’.
In my opinion, this is the most important fact that helped with the attack. Old virus programs and old virus definitions lack the current tools necessary to fight off the virus attacks and although your pc needs to be right all of the time, the attacker only needs to be right once and then you get infected.
The second point is the speed of the attack. When your information is compromised, the attackers don’t wait for you to figure it out, they immediately have plans in place to drain your accounts. Make sure that you logging into your bank correctly and not from an email you received or a banner you clicked on.
And then lastly, the burden is clearly on you. Your bank will not help chase your attackers and will gladly transfer funds that they believe you are requesting. Ask your bank if you can put limits on such transactions or ban them altogether. The bottom line is to protect yourself from the hackers, because it’s only going to get worse.
