I’m not sure if you know this, but every Tuesday is Microsoft Patch Day, and this is the day that Microsoft publicly recognizes all the holes and flaws in their various operating systems and programs and puts out a “patch” to fix it. Some of these patches aren’t that big a deal, but others are a REALLY big deal. Last week was a really big deal and there’s some bleed over to this week. There are a total of seven bulletins, three critical and four important. As always, please make sure that when Microsoft, or Adobe or Java wants to update your software versions that you comply with their wishes.
If you look on the taskbar down to the right on your pc (although some of you move the taskbar to the left or up top), check right by the time and if you see a little adobe icon, or a java icon or a yellow Microsoft shield, you have updates waiting. One word of warning, some of the updates will want to reboot your pc, so be sure that you’re not in the middle of something that you don’t want to save, or better yet, save everything first.
Not all updates are good updates though. Occasionally when you are surfing the web you’ll encounter a website that says your java or your adobe needs to be updated. Please do NOT allow this to happen. The website it trying to add its’ own version to what you already have and usually it’s malware designed to track you as you traverse the web. If you are unsure, go to Adobe’s website or Java’s website and download the latest version from them and if the website you are visiting STILL wants to update, you’ll see what I mean. As always, if there is a doubt, there is no doubt, DON’T DO IT.
Happy Computing,
