When to replace your surge protector?

About once a week someone will bring in a pc that’s got storm damage, a lightning strike or flickering power and tell me that they’ve had the computer on a surge strip for years and they don’t understand why the power supply or motherboard failed. The best answer is that their surge strip is no longer protecting them, although it still works. The average surge strip should be replaced every 3 years and more if you live in a stormy area (like St. Louis). If you’ve ever had the lights flicker during a storm, that’s bad for your electronic equipment and it’s not the power decline that hurts as much as the power restore that surges into the component, potentially frying it.  You can turn your pc off, but then you can’t use it, but unfortunately sometimes that’s the best answer, unplugging your electronic equipment from the wall. That said, most people don’t use a laptop with a surge strip and there’s an easy fix, just unplug it during a storm. You can continue to use the battery while the storm is raging on but it’s best to protect your equipment by not letting it get any flickering power, or lightning strikes.
